3Com PC Card Terminology
XJACK® Connector:
This popular connector is included on many 3Com PC cards and allows you to
connect a telephone line directly to your PC card. It works like a ballpoint pen
just slide the PC card into your computer, pop out the XJACK connector, and plug
in your LAN or phone cable.
Integrated RJ-45:
This eight-pin connector is located on a Type III PC card and is used to connect
computers to a local-area network (LAN). Although it looks similar to the RJ-11
connector that is used for connecting telephone equipment, an RJ-45 connector is
twice the width.
Integrated RJ-11:
This four- or six-wire connector is used primarily to connect telephone
equipment in the United States. Used for standard dialup through your phone. An
Integrated RJ-11 means that the connector is built into a Type III PC card.
Cable/Podule:
A podule is a small external piece that connects to the PC Card on one side and
accepts the appropriate network connector type on the other. PC Cards that don't
include an integrated connector or XJACK connector require a podule. Podules are
sometimes used to connect a PC Card to an ISDN line or phone line.
XJACK Antenna: This unique antenna extends to provide excellent reception
anywhere you need it, then retracts within the notebook so you can travel
conveniently without worrying about breakage.
Integrated Antenna: The integrated antenna is a sturdy, flat antenna that
is fixed to the PC Card. It will protrude from the notebook approx. 1 inch. A
card with this type of antenna will need to be removed from the notebook before
travel.
