Installation Tips:

Panasonic KX-TG4000B
2.4 GHz Phone System

& KX-TG4500B 5.8GHz

Operational Notes & Reference:

  • Installation Notes and Diagrams -  Below is a list of most commonly asked questions. Toward the bottom of the page we have wiring diagrams to assist you with the installation of you phone system.
  • Transformers - The KX-TG4500B can use either transformer for the base or handset. However, the KX-TG4000B must use the Larger AC Adaptor PQLV12 must be used with base unit and smaller AC Adaptor KX-TCA1 must be used with handset charger. If they are switched the you may experience a buzzing sound when in use.
  • Handset 1 Notes - The cordless handset that is in the same box as the base is pre-registered at the factory and assigned the handset extension # 1. Registration is needed for any additional handsets. Do NOT de-register (the included) handset #1, as you may experience difficulty in re-registering it and may cause the need to send it in for service.
  • Wiring Notes - If the you have 4 separate lines coming into your home/office you will need two T-adaptors - (Panasonic model KX-J24) and two 2-wire telephone line cords to connect the KX-TG4500B four-line system.
  • No Dial Tone - You have 4 phone lines... After plugging everything in you only have lines 1 & 3 working, what happened ? See condition #4 below, you have the incorrect "T" adapter installed.
  • Memory Card - When you remove the memory card ( Plastic & Paper Card), and use it as a name index for your cordless handset intercom buttons, be sure to reinstall it correctly. If you re-install it upside down, it will hold down one of the extension keys and disable the other keys, including the numeric keypad. If this happens, you will have a dial tone, but none of the keys will work.
  • Auto Attendant - In the Automated Attendant mode none of the phones will ring when a call comes in ( the Auto Attendant picks up the call before the first ring) and the caller must select an extension followed by the # sign. If no extension is selected, or the caller is calling from a rotary phone, the greeting will repeat 3 times and then transfer to the Operators mail box (general delivery mailbox). In the Auto Answer mode, all phones ring, until the outgoing greeting message comes on, this is just like any phone with a built-in answering system, except the caller will also have the opportunity to select any extension or wait for the beep and leave a message in the general delivery mailbox.
  • Hunting - Line roll over (Hunting) is a service offered by the telephone companies.  The  KX-TG4000B phone system is compatible with this service. When a call comes in on one telephone line, this service will hunt the call onto the next available telephone line.  Should all 4 lines be in use, the caller will hear a busy signal. We can secure this local service from your phone company for you.
  • HOLD - When a caller is put on hold, a warning tone (beep) will sound after 30 seconds. After 2 minutes the Automated Attendant will respond to the caller. The caller call a another extension handset, or leave a message. This is normal and the tone (beep) cannot be either disabled or the volume lowered.  We recommend Music On Hold.
  • Conference - When a line is in use by the base unit or any handset, you can not join in on that line by picking up another extension, nor can anyone pick up an extension and eavesdrop on your conversation. The extension in use needs to transfer the call to a different extension or you can conference another extension to make a 3-way conference call.
  • Caller ID - When a call is received, the caller's Name and phone number will be displayed between the 1st and 2nd ring. Caller ID must be ordered as a separate service from you telephone company in order for this feature to work. This system will display Smart Caller ID (Name & Phone Number) providing your local telephone company provides this service. We can help you obtain this service with your local phone company.
  • Operation Manual - I misplaced my operation Manual - No Problem... We have a On-Line PDF file you can download (4.11 MB).
  • Click Here for the KX-TG4000B System
  • Click Here for the KX-TG4500B System
  • Options
  • What are the additional Options I Can Add to the KX-TG4000B Phone System....
  • Headsets - All phone in the system are headset ready. We recommend model M-175 providing Mic Volume control, Headset Volume control, and mute switch. This features a noise reducing Mic, all these features for under $39.00.
  • Music-On Hold  - (MOH) is built into the KX-TG4500B, but requires software to change music and messages. We recommend the OHP-6000 System for this phone. MOH is available for the KX-TG4000B  system through a special on-hold device that works automatically with the base (KX-TG4000B), and desk top speaker phones (KX-TGA420B). The cordless phones (KX-TGA400B) require a two step process to place the called on hold "AND" activate the MOH feature. You will need the OHP-6500 for the KX-TG4000B system.
  • Surge Protection - We recommend you install surge protection on the base unit. the surge protection we recommend covers both the incoming phone lines and the AC power.
  • Battery Backup - The handset battery operation will provide several hours of talk time and several days of standby time. However, the base unit battery will only supply you with about 30 minutes of operation should the power fail. A small APC unit will provide you with several hours of operation until the power is restored.
  •  Door Phone Option - NEW !  Now available is our door phone adapter for the KX-TG4000B and KX-TG4500B phone system. You can have two door phones added to your system with a selection of two styles of door phones.
  • Buzz In Door Operation - Operate a electric door strike or entry gate when combined with door Phone Option.
  • Keyless Door Entry - When combined with the Door Phone Option, a keyless door entry system will allow access using a code entered via keypad on door phone or proximity card reader.
  • Paging - Paging is available when combined with the door phone module. Paging system allows for outdoor paging (Paging Horn) or indoor paging (Ceiling Speakers) .
  • Cellular Phone Module - We can add a cellular phone module to your system by using one of your four phone lines. This module converts cellular to analog dial tone allowing you place and receive calls thru this phone system and save money by using your free cellular minutes. As us for more information about this feature.
  • Custom Features - I don't see a feature above that meets my needs. No problem, we can usually provide you with a custom solution. Just send us an email with your request. Please be specific as possible.

Wiring Lessons - 101

First lets start with some basic jack wiring information. A standard jack has 4 pins which are numbered across as 1,2,3,4.  A single line telephone only uses pins 2 &3 ( middle two pins) to obtain dial tone to that device. The outside two pins can be used for Line 2 or for other devices.

Wiring Terminology:

Using pins 2 & 3 only refer to as RJ-11.
Using pins 1,2,3,4 refer to as RJ-14.

Condition 1 - You only have one phone number (Phone Line) at your location. The cable installer may just install & wire each jack for this phone line by using pins 2 & 3 (RJ11) to provide dial tone to your telephone.

Condition 2 - You have two phone lines at your location. The cable installer may install one jack and wire as below or provide you with two jacks using pins 2 & 3 "ONLY" (RJ11) in each jack. So one jack is line one and the other jack is line 2.

Condition 3 - You have four phone lines at your location. The cable installer may install two jacks and wire as below. This will provide you with line 1 &2 in jack #1 (RJ14) and lines 3 &4 in jack #2 (RJ14).

Condition 4 - You have four phone lines at your location. The cable installer has installed four jacks on the wall only using pins 2 & 3 "ONLY" in each jack. This configuration will have 1 Jacks per phone line (RJ11),

Jack1 = Line1, Jack 2 = Line 2, Jack 3 = Line 3, Jack 4 = Line 4.

OK - Now lets look at some practical ways of installing the phone system using the above explained conditions.

Condition # 1 & 2 & 3 Installation - This installation is quite simple, just plug in the line cord to the wall jacks and the back of the KX-TG4000B Phone System. Test each line for dial tone. Now go on to registering each additional handset/speaker phone, Record your greetings, and your done.

Condition # 4 Installation - Adapter makes two RJ-11 to one RJ-14

The AT&T Special adapter shown below, and short modular cord, used to combine phone lines from two separate single-line (RJ11) jacks to provide one two-line (RJ14) jack. Great for phone systems that use two-line jacks, such as the Panasonic KX-TG4000B Phone System. A big time-saver if the phone company has supplied single-line jacks at your location as stated in condition # 4 above.

Remember, you will need a special adapter, don't be fooled by the outward appearance of these "T" adapters, there are about a dozen different wiring schematics, but only one plastic molding for all. You may order them from us, or try your local Radio Shack.
